This premier agricultural awards program was developed by Extension Director Mike McKinney and the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee. The goal of the program was to recognize outstanding contributions in various categories; celebrating those who have advanced agriculture through leadership, innovation, service, and dedication. The program aims to inspire future generations and to strengthen the agricultural community. The program is also intended to preserve the rich agricultural history of Hillsborough County.
The Harvest Awards have always been held in conjunction with the Hillsborough County Fair. The first Awards program featured the Roy Parke family as the first Farm Family and Marshal Platt for Lifetime Achievement in agriculture. Mabel Simmons was the first woman to receive the achievement award the following year. Over the years the program has added categories such as Outstanding young farmer, rancher or nurseryman, Agribusiness, Women of the Year, Urban Agriculture, and Outstanding Public and Community Service in Ag.
When Mr. McKinney retired from the Extension Service, the Ag. Policy Committee was dissolved. Tom Umiker, the Fair Manager at that time, contacted Mike and asked if he would consider moving the awards program under the leadership and administration of the Fair. This marvelous journey has taken the awards luncheon from a formal dinner at Holiday Inn to tents on the fairgrounds and even under the old Sombrero stadium to now on the grounds of the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds. Hopefully with the community’s support, the Harvest Awards program will be around another 25 years celebrating the best in Hillsborough County Agriculture and remembering and honoring those who were the pioneers of the industry.
